HASHIM AMLA will make his national captaincy debut in both the T20 and ODI formats when the Proteas start their series against Australia next week. The opening fixture is the first of two T20 International matches to be played at Sahara Park Newlands on Thursday, October 13.
Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) national selectors on Monday named the squads for both formats. Richard Levi of the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras is the only new cap (in the T20 format) while there are recalls for David Miller of the Sunfoil Dolphins in both formats and for Mark Boucher of the Cobras in the ODI format only. Heino Kuhn of the Nashua Titans will keep wicket in the T20 format.
The inclusion of Boucher and Miller at the expense of Morne van Wyk of the Chevrolet Knights, Colin Ingram of the Chevrolet Warriors and the injured AB de Villiers of the Nashua Titans are the changes to the ODI squad that did duty at the 2011 edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup.
“With the ICC World Twenty20 less than a year away we need to keep a solid core of experience around the side,” commented CSA selection convener Andrew Hudson, “but at the same time we want to give younger players a run as well and this certainly applies in the case of Richard Levi and David Miller.
“We don’t have a lot of T20 International matches before the ICC event so it is important that we give the likes of Levi, Miller and Colin Ingram an extended run. Heino Kuhn also gets an opportunity as a result of AB de Villiers’ unfortunate injury.
“We have left Jacques Kallis and Dale Steyn out of the T20 squad as part of our rotation policy. Both players were keen to play but this is part of our rotation policy as selectors. We have a lot of cricket ahead of us, not just this season, but also in the next off-season with the tour to England as well as the World Twenty20 and we must manage our senior players sensibly.”
Hudson said that the ODI squad just needed a few tweaks after the World Cup campaign. “We will probably go in with seven batsmen, including Boucher at No. 7, and we have kept all our bowling options that worked well at the World Cup.
“We will be able to go in with four specialist bowlers plus the back-up of Kallis, JP Duminy and Faf du Plessis.”
Boucher and Albie Morkel are carrying minor injuries but should be fit for selection.
Castle Lager ODI squad: Hashim Amla (Sunfoil Dolphins, capt), Johan Botha (Chevrolet Warriors), Mark Boucher (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), JP Duminy (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), Faf du Plessis (Nashua Titans), Imran Tahir (Sunfoil Dolphins), Jacques Kallis (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), David Miller (Sunfoil Dolphins), Morne Morkel (Nashua Titans), Wayne Parnell (Chevrolet Warriors), Robin Peterson (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), Graeme Smith (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), Dale Steyn (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras), Lonwabo Tsotsobe (Chevrolet Warriors).
