In yet another groundbreaking move by the Sunfoil Dolphins, they announced today that they have signed Chris Gayle for the PRO20 competition early in 2012.
A West Indian all rounder, hailing from Jamaica, Gayle is known to decimate his opponents with his no-holds-barred style of batting and will be joining the Sunfoil Dolphins. Tall and imposing at the crease, he loves to carve through the covers off either foot, and has the ability to decimate the figures of even the thriftiest of opening bowlers.
Fondly called “Mr Cool”, this all rounder, is the only batsman to have hit a century in a Twenty20 international and was the leading batsman at the last edition of the IPL. In domestic T20 cricket, his batting average is 39, with a strike rate of 150.
"I am really excited to be joining the Sunfoil Dolphins. T20 is a form of the game I love and to get the opportunity to play in a beautiful place like Durban is massively appealing. South Africa will provide a new challenge, and I'm sure alongside Shaun Tait and under the guidance of Graham Ford we can be a success,” commented Gayle.
“It is indeed a huge privilege for the Sunfoil Dolphins fans, players and coaching staff to have such a brilliant player involved in our 20/20 campaign! Chris has an amazing record as a player and will not only bring a huge amount of flair and excitement to our cricket but will also bring a vast amount of experience and knowledge which will greatly assist the progress of our younger players!” commented Graham Ford, Head Coach of the Dolphins.
“The signing of Chris Gayle and Shaun Tait demonstrates the ambition and commitment of the Sunfoil Dolphins to be successful this season. Both are global stars and are world beaters at their respective disciplines. My sincere thanks and appreciation to our Board, chaired by Mr Faeez Jaffar, for their guidance and support in helping us secure both these players and also to Sunfoil for providing financial assistance towards securing Chris Gayle”, said Jesse Chellan, CEO of KZN and Dolphins cricket.
Sunfoil Dolphins sponsor Shoaib Moosa Sales and Marketing Director of Willowton Group concurred that the signing of Chris Gayle would add a new dimension to the Sunfoil Dolphins team in the forth coming season and also be a huge attraction for the fans to get down to the ground and watch him in action. “We are proud to be associated with the Sunfoil Dolphins and wish them every success in the new season,” concluded Moosa.
With the Pro 20 competition being a double round this year, it is hoped that Dolphins fans will turn out in their numbers to support the Dolphins, with these international stars, in their 12 home and away matches this season. For the first time ever, the Dolphins will play a domestic Pro 20 match at the Pietermaritzburg Oval on Sunday, 19 Feb 2011.
