Banbury Stuns Struggling Quake

The San Jose Earthquakes' elation at scoring a late goal against Sporting Kansas City turned to misery in 50 seconds, yesterday, when Teal Bunbury tore the Quakes' rearguard apart, to claim his eighth goal of the season, and tie the fixture at 1-all. "'We went right at them immediately"', Banbury told the website of Major League Soccer.

Yesterday's match seemed to indicate, for many, that the side is simply not good enough to compete in the play-offs. The Quakes' goalkeeper, Jon Busch, noted that "'good teams"' would have ended the match in front. "'We just switched off"', Busch said. "'We need to say, 'look at the clock. We've got four minutes left. Let's finish this game off.'"'

San Jose's performance in this year's campaign represents a reversal in fortunes for Los Terremotos. During last season, the Quakes only lost two of the games in which they scored first, for a total of 13 victories; this year, they have won only five. The side's winning percentage has almost halved, falling from .911 in 2010/11, to .577, this season. People looking for soccer betting tips need to remember this.

Frank Yallop, chief at the Quakes, said that the match against Kansas City "'sums everything up this year"'. Their opponents earned a well-deserved point, despite struggling to contain San Jose in the first half. City's Banbury frightened the Quakes' defence 25 minutes before he capitalised on San Jose's complacency, but his effort was smothered by Busch. Those who bet on soccer games should bear this in mind.

San Jose desperately need a positive result, to lift them above the floor of the Western Conference. The team's next fixture, against rock-bottom side, the New England Revolution, is, perhaps, the best chance the Earthquakes will get to snatch a win from their few remaining games of the season.
