Jail for ‘show off’ driver who killed Liverpool dad Alan Jackson

A BOY racer drove at motorway speeds down one of Liverpool’s busiest roads, killing a much-loved dad-of-two and injuring two others.

University drop-out Sam Griffiths, 23, ploughed his out-of-control Ford Fiesta into the pedestrians on Smithdown Road, Wavertree, after speeding through red lights, undertaking and flashing other drivers to get out of his way.

He killed Alan Jackson (pictured), 48, after losing steering as he hurtled around a bend – leaving himself with permanent brain damage.

Griffiths, of Apple Tree Close in Allerton, was yesterday jailed for four years, three months after previously admitting death by dangerous driving.

Mr Jackson’s family wept as the sentence was read out by Judge Mark Brown.

He told Griffiths: “Your aggressive driving has had devastating and tragic consequences for others. There is no doubt in my mind that your motivation was thrill-seeking and bravado. This was a form of boy racing, where you were showing off to the other person in the car.”

The court heard how Mr Jackson, a grandad of two, was fixing a light in the back of a white van when he was hit by Griffiths’s silver car on November 20 last year.

The Liverpool FC fan, who owned The Liverpool Furniture Repair Centre, died after undergoing emergency surgery.

Friend Adam Swainbank escaped with minor injuries but still suffers from post-traumatic stress and flashbacks.

Passer-by Joshua Holmes closed his eyes as the speeding car came towards him, his right knee taking the brunt of the impact as he was thrown to the kerb.
