THE Chevrolet Knights duly completed a six-wicket victory over the Nashua Titans at SuperSport Park on Sunday to take a useful lead of 10 points at the top of the log after completion of the first round of SuperSport Series matches.
The Knights were given a minor scare when the weather delayed their pursuit of the remaining 25 runs needed for victory but they still completed a well deserved victory early on the final morning.
Ryan McLaren, whose unbeaten century effectively took the match away from the Titans to give his side a first innings lead of 173, earned Match Referee Cyril MItchley’s vote as Man of the Match.
The other match between the bizhub Highveld Lions and the Sunfoil Dolphins at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium finished in a high scoring draw but nevertheless produced much excellent cricket.
There was still a chance that the Dolphins could force a victory as long as the Lions were still wiping out the first innings deficit of 208. They were given an excellent start by Alviro Petersen who raced to 50 off 55 balls with 11 fours. When he was dismissed for 64 (72 balls, 14 fours) he had taken his aggregate for the match to exactly 250.
His opener partner, Stephen Cook, also played an important innings, keeping the Dolphins’ bowlers at bay for more than four hours while making 78 runs (229 balls, 9 fours).
The Lions finished on 260/5 for an overall lead of 52 runs.
Match referee Tiffie Barnes named Hashim Amla as Man of the Match for his first innings double century.
Points position: Chevrolet Knights 18.64, Sunfoil Dolphins 8.2, Nashua Titans 5.54, bizhub Highveld Lions 5.22. Byes: Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras and Chevrolet Warriors.
