Wirral’s ruling Labour group is under increased pressure after the Lib-Dem leader refused to say who his party would support

WIRRAL’S ruling Labour group was under increased pressure today, after the Lib-Dems leader refused to say who his party would support in a crucial vote on the council leadership.

However, Lib-Dem leader Tom Harney did say his group is “determined to find a way that gives all parties a role” in dealing with the problems engulfing the council.

Cllr Harney has already had “informal discussions on a number of occasions” with the Tory leader and said he will be meeting with the council leader, Steve Foulkes, later this week before seeking the views of his party.

His comments follow a bid by the Tory group to oust the current leader of the authority, Steve Foulkes, with a key vote planned for the next full meeting of the council.

The Conservatives, led by Jeff Green, have criticised the Labour leadership’s response to a highly critical report on Wirral Council’s “corporate governance” – how it is run and managed. They have submitted a motion to the next full meeting of the council later this month seeking a change of leader and the creation of an all-party cabinet.

Cllr Green accused the Labour leader of “macho approach to leadership” and of being “unable or unwilling to listen to more than a few of his most trusted Labour lieutenants – while the residents of Wirral look on in horror and disbelief at the revelations”.

Cllr Foulkes immediately hit back saying Jeff Green, who commissioned the Klonowski report which is still to be published in full, was now using it as a “£250,000 political ambush”.
